Essential Smart Growth Fixes for Urban and Suburban Zoning Codes

Many local governments lack the resources or expertise to make the specific regulatory changes that will create more sustainable communities. And for many, model codes or ordinances can be too general for practical use or are often designed to be adopted wholesale, which many communities are unprepared to do. To respond to this need, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Development, Community, and Environment Division (DCED), also known as the Smart Growth Program, has put together this document to help those communities that may not wish to revise or replace their entire system of codes and ordinances, but nevertheless are looking for “essential fixes” that will help them get the smarter, more environmentally responsible, and sustainable communities they want.
