Agricultural Land Protection: An Essential Tool for Fighting Climate Change

As states and the federal government seek solutions to climate change, an important strategy is the protection of working farms and ranches. This paper presents five major ways in which agricultural conservation easements help mitigate climate change while also permanently protecting American farmland. It builds off of survey results of owners whose land was protected by the federal Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP), the precursor to the USDA NRCS’s Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP).
