New York’s Agricultural Districts Law was enacted in 1971 to help keep farmland in active agricultural production. An agricultural district can be developed when a group of interested landowners – who collectively own 500 acres – submit a proposal to their county requesting the formation of a district. Significant additions were made to the law in 1992, including the addition of strengthened right to farm protections.
