Soil Health and Sustainability for Field Staff Training

The Soil Health and Sustainability for Field Staff Training was designed by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Soil Health Division under direction of Bianca Moebius-Clune prior to her arrival at American Farmland Trust. That work was done in collaboration with others across NRCS and partners to provide field staff and stakeholders with an overall understanding of soil health principles and management options for rebuilding healthy high functioning soils. It was built as the certification course for NRCS to meet Conservation Planning Certification Requirements. Participants learn to evaluate soil health, gain an understanding of in field soil health indicators and their relationship to on- and off-farm effects of management, and to communicate soil health concerns and opportunities to farmers, employees, and partners through conservation technical assistance and planning that complies with national policy and beyond. Participants learn to apply soil health and sustainability principles and conservation technology holistically to design soil health management systems that supply resilient, safe, healthy and abundant food and fiber and sustain ecosystem functions on agricultural lands.
