Cover Crop Demonstration Trial Case Studies

Curious about the soil health and economic impacts of adopting cover crops? These 6-page case studies detail seven farmer’s participation in a 5-year on-farm cover crop demonstration trial with American Farmland Trust (AFT) in 2021-2025. They describe the farmer’s history with cover cropping, the trial design, soil and economic outcomes, and the farmer’s takeaways from the project.

Trials included cover cropping techniques such as planting green, harvesting green chop, terminating cover crops with herbicide and/or roller crimping, increased cover crop seeding rates, and more!

These case studies are intended for producers, extension professionals, and other agricultural professionals who help producers consider how to adopt cover crops and/or modify their cover crop management systems.

The Technical Note describes the methods used to conduct the soil health and economic analyses.
