A Proof of Concept for Estimating the Agricultural Economic Impact of Farmland Loss to Development

The rapid conversion of farmland to development is impacting the value of agricultural production and its contribution to the local and regional economy of Canyon County, Idaho. American Farmland Trust recognized the need for a data-driven analysis to accurately estimate the value of agricultural production of Canyon County and the impact of rapid conversion to non-agricultural land uses. Developed in partnership with University of Idaho Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics, Patrick Hatzenbuehler, this proof of concept estimates the value of the agricultural production lost to land conversion using publicly available data and GIS shapefiles.
