COMET-Farm™

COMET-Farm™ is a whole farm and ranch carbon and greenhouse gas accounting system. COMET-Farm™ guides producers through describing their farm and ranch management practices including alternative future management scenarios.  COMET stands for CarbOn Management & Emissions Tool, a computer modeling platform developed by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Colorado State University to help farmers and ranchers evaluate the environmental impact of conservation practices. With COMET-Farm™, producers can enter information about their land and management—including location, soil characteristics, land uses, tillage practices and nutrient use—into the online tool. The tool then estimates the environmental benefits associated with conservation practices for cropland, pasture, rangeland, livestock operations and energy. Once complete, a report is generated comparing the carbon changes and greenhouse gas emissions between current management practices and future scenarios.

COMET-Farm™ is applicable to all agricultural lands in the lower 48 states. The tool is available for use at www.comet-farm.com. Future model releases are planned by NRCS as new methods for calculating greenhouse gas emissions become available.
